A masterclass turns your best teaching into a product
By the time you have taught 1:1 and run a few group classes, you have discovered something valuable: there is one topic you teach better than anyone, that students consistently light up about, and that produces your best results. A masterclass is how you package that single strength into something you can sell to many people at once, at a premium.
A masterclass is a focused, high-value session, usually live, often for a group, that takes students deep on one specific outcome. It sits above a regular group class in both depth and price. Where a group class walks students through a subject over time, a masterclass concentrates your best teaching on one thing and delivers it as an event people are excited to attend.
Done well, it is one of the most profitable things an independent teacher can offer: many attendees, one preparation, a premium price, and a result students remember.
Step 1: Choose one outcome worth showing up for
The whole masterclass rests on the topic. Pick wrong and no structure or promotion will save it. Pick right and it nearly sells itself.
The strongest masterclass topics share three traits:
- Specific. Not "improve your writing" but "write an opening that makes editors keep reading." A narrow promise is a believable promise.
- High-value. The outcome should matter enough that people will pay a premium and clear their calendar for it. Think results tied to stakes: passing, landing, launching, performing.
- Yours. It should be the thing you teach better than most, backed by results you can point to. Your reputation on this topic is what makes people trust the promise.
The easiest way to find your topic: look at the questions students ask most, the moments they have their biggest breakthroughs with you, and the results in your best testimonials. Your masterclass is usually hiding in your existing teaching.
