Language tutors on TikTok have something most tutors on Preply or italki do not: students who already know them. Someone who has watched 50 of your "say this, not that" videos has picked their teacher. The question is how they book and pay you.
This guide covers when a marketplace makes sense and when your own link does, what to sell, how to handle time zones and intake, and what you keep on each route, using the marketplaces' own published commission rates.
The Short Answer
Language tutors with a TikTok following can sell paid lessons from a booking link in their bio instead of a tutoring marketplace. Offer a 15-minute conversation practice call, a 30- or 45-minute lesson, and a lesson pack. Students book a time shown in their own time zone, pay by card, and join the video lesson in their browser.
Your followers already picked their teacher.
Sell 15-minute practice calls and lessons from your TikTok bio. Booking, video, and payment in one link. You keep 90% on the free plan.
Marketplace or Your Own Link
Marketplaces like Preply and italki bring you students you would never reach on your own. They also set the commission, the trial lesson terms, and the rules about contacting students outside the platform. Here is what they publish today:
- Preply takes 100% of the first trial lesson with each new student. After that it takes 18% to 33% of each lesson, starting at 33% for new tutors and falling as your total teaching hours grow. (Preply Help Center, "Preply commission model".)
- italki takes no commission on trial lessons, 21% on single lessons, 19% to 15% on 5- to 20-lesson packages, and 30% on group classes. (italki Support, "How does italki charge a commission?")
If most of your students find you through the marketplace, that commission pays for the students. If they find you on TikTok, you are paying the commission on students you brought yourself. That is when your own link makes sense. Many tutors do both: stay on a marketplace for new students and send their own followers to their own link.
What to Sell
| Session | Length | What the student gets | Suggested starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conversation practice | 15 min | Speaking time with a native or fluent speaker, plus corrections | $12 to $20 |
| Lesson | 30 min | One focused topic with practice | $20 to $35 |
| Lesson | 45 min | A full lesson plus conversation | $30 to $50 |
| 5-lesson pack | 5 x 45 min | A month of weekly lessons at a small discount | $135 to $225 |
| Conversation club | 60 min group | Practice with other learners at the same level | $10 to $20 a seat |
The 15-minute conversation call is the TikTok-native offer. It matches what your videos already do (short, practical, a little scary to try) and it is an easy first purchase.
Time Zones and Weekly Slots
Your followers are spread across time zones. On Talkspresso, students see your open times converted to their own time zone, so a student in Madrid and one in Chicago each see the right local time for the same slot. Set weekly hours once, and the same slots open every week, so a student who likes Tuesdays at 6 can book Tuesday at 6 again.
Intake Questions
Ask before the first lesson, so you can plan it:
- What is your level? (beginner, can hold a basic conversation, comfortable, advanced)
- What is your goal? (travel, an exam, family or heritage, work, moving abroad)
- How do you want to be corrected? (right away, at the end, only big mistakes)
- What is your first language?
Turning Comments Into Bookings
- "Correct my accent" videos. Viewers send their attempts in the comments. Answer a few, then: "Want me to listen live? 15-minute practice calls, link in bio."
- Pin the video that names the offer and the price.
- Reply to "do you teach?" messages with the link, not a back-and-forth about times.
- Share it in your first week. On Talkspresso, 20 of the 38 real bookings in 2026 came within 7 days of the creator signing up. Bookings that came more than 90 days after signup: 5 all year, none of them paid.
What You Keep on a $30 Lesson
Platform commission only, before payment processing and withdrawal fees on every row. Marketplace rates are from their own help pages, checked November 2, 2026.
| Route | Commission on a $30 lesson | You keep |
|---|---|---|
| Preply, new tutor (33%) | $9.90 | $20.10 |
| Preply, 400+ hours taught (18%) | $5.40 | $24.60 |
| italki, single lesson (21%) | $6.30 | $23.70 |
| italki, 20-lesson package (15%) | $4.50 | $25.50 |
| Talkspresso free plan (10%) | $3.00 | $27.00 |
| Talkspresso Pro ($29.95 a month) | $0 | $30.00 |
The marketplace rows include students the marketplace found for you. The Talkspresso rows assume students you found yourself. That difference is the real decision.
Set Up Your Booking Link
On Talkspresso:
