Therapist Academy · Stage 3 of 5
Quick answer
Start a private-pay practice by setting clear session rates, deciding whether to offer a limited sliding scale, and building a simple intake process. Your first clients typically come from directories and referrals; a smooth intake and clear pricing convert inquiries into booked sessions.
Key takeaways
Everything you need for the first revenue stage, strongest first.
Rates depend on your license, specialty, and local market. Set a rate that reflects your training and sustains your practice, and decide separately whether to reserve a few sliding-scale spots for accessibility.
Many therapists start private-pay to avoid insurance administration and rate caps, sometimes offering superbills so clients can seek out-of-network reimbursement. The right choice depends on your market and the clients you want to serve.
Use a secure, compliant system for scheduling, consent forms, and payment so a new client can book and pay without friction. A clear, private intake sets the tone for the work.
